The short answer: Most US fractional CTOs charge $150 to $250 an hour. For about two days a week that is $9,000 to $15,000 a month, according to Go Fractional marketplace data from October 2026. Senior operators charge more. A full-time US CTO costs about $410,000 to $435,000 in year one once bonus, benefits and a search fee are added. Two days a week from a fractional CTO costs roughly 55% to 75% less.
Ask three fractional CTOs for a price and you will get three very different answers. One quotes an hourly rate. Another quotes a monthly retainer. A third wants equity. Few explain what you actually get for the money.
This guide breaks fractional CTO pricing into plain numbers. It covers the four pricing models, rates by commitment level, US vs offshore pricing and the real cost of a full-time CTO. Every market figure names its source. It ends with the exact prices ibute charges. We think you should not have to book a call just to see a number.
If you are still deciding whether you need one at all, start with our guide to what a fractional CTO does.
The Four Ways Fractional CTOs Charge
1. Monthly retainer. The usual model for ongoing work. You pay a fixed amount each month for a set number of days or hours. It is predictable for you and keeps the CTO committed to your company.
2. Hourly rate. Common for light advisory work. Most US fractional CTOs charge $150 to $250 an hour, with an average of $210 (Go Fractional, October 2026). Senior operators charge $300 to $500 an hour and specialists in AI, fintech and regulated industries $600 to $1,000 (Tristella Advisors, July 2026).
3. Day rate. Used for workshops, audits and time-boxed projects. Tristella Advisors puts a senior fractional CTO at $2,500 to $5,000 a day.
4. Fixed project fee. Used for defined pieces of work such as a technical assessment or a due diligence review. Tristella Advisors puts discovery and assessment projects at $8,000 to $15,000 over two to four weeks.
Some startups also offer equity with a lower cash retainer. It can work for very early companies but it makes the arrangement harder to end cleanly.
Fractional CTO Rates by Commitment Level
The biggest driver of cost is how much time you buy. This table turns hourly rates into monthly retainers so you can compare like with like:
| Time commitment | Typical monthly retainer | Senior operator monthly retainer |
|---|---|---|
| About 1 day a week | $4,800 to $8,000 | $8,000 to $12,000 |
| About 2 days a week | $9,000 to $15,000 | $12,000 to $20,000 |
| About 3 days a week | $14,400 to $24,000 | $18,000 to $25,000+ |
Typical rates: Go Fractional marketplace data (October 2026), the middle half of rates from 1,011 candidate profiles and 19 job posts, using its formula of hours a week × 4 weeks × hourly rate. Senior operators: Tristella Advisors (July 2026).
For most seed and Series A companies we recommend about two days a week. That is enough time to own the roadmap, run hiring and keep vendors honest without paying for a full-time executive.
US vs Offshore Fractional CTOs
Offshore fractional CTOs usually charge less than US-based ones. Published offshore rate tables vary widely and rarely show their method. We do not repeat them here. Our own Lahore prices below are one concrete example.
Offshore pricing is attractive but the savings can disappear if the CTO works in a very different time zone, communicates poorly or has never led teams at your scale. Judge the person and their track record first and the price second.
What ibute Charges in 2027
We publish our prices. Every engagement is led by senior people: our founder Irfan Malik or our second fractional CTO, who specializes in platform and security architecture. You choose whether to contract through our Austin, TX office or our Lahore delivery hub.
| Contracted through Austin, TX | Contracted through Lahore | |
|---|---|---|
| 2-week CTO assessment (fixed price) | $6,000 | $3,500 |
| Retainer: 1 day a week | $6,000 a month | $3,500 a month |
| Retainer: 2 days a week | $11,000 a month | $6,500 a month |
| Retainer: 3 days a week | $15,000 a month | $9,000 a month |
| CTO + engineering team | Quoted separately | Quoted separately |
The leadership is the same either way. An Austin contract gives you a US contract and US invoicing. A Lahore contract is invoiced from our Lahore hub at a lower rate with working hours that overlap yours for meetings.
Every engagement starts with the 2-week assessment. You get a written report on your product, code, architecture, team and vendors plus a 90-day plan. If you stop there you still keep a plan you can hand to anyone. For comparison, Tristella Advisors puts a typical discovery and assessment project at $8,000 to $15,000.
Fractional CTO vs Full-Time CTO: The Real Cost
A full-time CTO costs much more than the salary on the offer letter:
| Cost item | Full-time CTO (US) | Fractional CTO (US, about 2 days a week) |
|---|---|---|
| Salary and bonus, or retainer | About $281,000 a year | $108,000 to $180,000 a year |
| Benefits and overhead | $35,000 to $60,000 a year | None |
| Executive search fee | About $94,000 one-time | None |
| Equity | Typically 1% to 3% | Optional |
| Time to hire | Often 3 to 6 months | Days to weeks |
| Year-one cash cost | About $410,000 to $435,000 | $108,000 to $180,000 |
Sources: salary and bonus from Built In (average US CTO base salary of $224,550 plus $56,435 in additional cash, 2026). Benefits, overhead, equity and time to hire from A.Team (June 2026). That benefits figure is conservative: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts benefits at 30% of total compensation for private-industry workers (June 2026). Search fee: retained search firms are paid about one third of first-year compensation, according to Heidrick & Struggles' 2024 annual report. Fractional: Go Fractional middle range for about two days a week (October 2026).
The full-time option starts to make financial sense once you have a large engineering team that needs daily leadership. Until then a fractional CTO gives you most of the senior judgment for a fraction of the cost.
What Drives the Price Up or Down
Five things move a fractional CTO quote:
- Time commitment. More days a week means a higher retainer but usually a lower effective hourly rate.
- Seniority. Someone who has led engineering organizations, not just teams, costs more and is usually worth it.
- Industry. Fintech, healthcare and other regulated industries carry a premium because mistakes are more expensive.
- AI depth. Fractional CTOs who have shipped AI to production charge more than those who have only advised on it.
- Firm or independent. Firm-based fractional CTOs typically charge 20% to 40% more than comparable independents, according to Tristella Advisors. In return you get a backup person and a team that can build.
Hidden Costs and Red Flags in Proposals
Watch for these before you sign:
- No defined scope. "Available as needed" usually means not available when you need it. Ask for a set number of days.
- No written reporting. You should get a monthly written update. If not, you cannot tell what you paid for.
- Long lock-in. A notice period of 30 to 60 days is reasonable. Be wary of twelve-month minimums.
- Equity for advice. Giving equity to someone who only advises and owns nothing is expensive in the long run.
- No exit plan. A good fractional CTO plans the handover to a full-time hire or your own team from the start.
How to Budget: Three Scenarios
Pre-seed founder validating an idea. One day a week to choose the stack, scope the MVP and hire one or two engineers. Budget $3,500 to $6,000 a month with ibute or about $4,800 to $8,000 at typical US rates.
Seed or Series A company scaling the product. About two days a week to own the roadmap, run hiring and manage vendors. Budget $6,500 to $11,000 a month with ibute or $9,000 to $15,000 at typical US rates. Senior operators charge $12,000 to $20,000.
Company between CTOs. Three days a week to keep delivery steady and run the search for a permanent hire. Budget $9,000 to $15,000 a month with ibute or about $14,400 to $24,000 at typical US rates.
If AI is part of your roadmap, budget for the build itself too. Our guides to AI implementation cost and AI agent development cost cover those numbers.
